Weight loss is a difficult yet important battle for many people. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), weight loss is a matter of calories in versus calories out. If you eat fewer calories than you work off, you will lose weight. Unfortunately, it's not always that easy. The CDC explains that even though many people know they need to eat fewer calories, the feeling of hunger is just too much to deal with. Eating low-calorie, filling foods will help you lose weight without being hungry.
Brown Rice
Brown rice is a whole grain that is rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals. In a Feb. 11, 2009 article in the "Huffington Post," Dr. Eric Braverman, an anti-aging expert, explained that whole grains, such as brown rice, are absorbed slowly when consumed. As a result, blood sugar levels don't dip, causing hunger and crankiness. Brown rice is a perfect substitute for white rice in any recipe or meal, and since it includes fiber, it will help keep you full longer.
Apples
The old adage "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" is not merely fiction; apples have a lot of health benefits, especially in terms of weight loss. The CDC states that fruits, such as apples, can help people lose weight. This is because they are low in calories--only about 100 calories per apple--yet they are fairly large in volume because they are full of water. So you feel full after eating one.
Oats
Oatmeal in the morning is a healthy breakfast that can help you lose weight because of its fiber content. Dr. Braverman noted in the "Huffington Post" that oats, being a whole grain, prevent sudden drops in blood sugars and therefore help decrease fatigue and food cravings. Instead of eating a flavored oatmeal, stick with all-natural, unflavored, steel -ut oats, which have a lot of fiber. You can add berries or raisins for flavor.
Spinach
Spinach is a nutrient-rich vegetable that is low in calories. According to the CDC, vegetables, such as spinach, may decrease health risks, including high cholesterol, while at the same time promoting weight loss and weight management. Spinach is low in calories so you can eat a lot of it without gaining weight. Try a spinach salad instead of your regular lettuce, or sauté some spinach as a side dish for your dinner.
Low-Fat Yogurt
Dr. Nicholas Perricone, a dermatologist and nutrition expert, explained in a July 15, 2005 article on Oprah's website that the calcium in yogurt helps people lose weight. It is not clear yet just how this works, but people who eat yogurt often tend to lose weight easier than those who don't eat yogurt, according to Oprah's website. Low-fat yogurt is a better choice than regular yogurt because it has less fat and fewer calories.
