How to Fix & Grow Damaged Hair

Your hair has become unmanageable and difficult to style. It is dry, damaged, frizzy, and impossible to work with. Although you would love to have long, full hair like the models on television, you blame your genes on the frizz. Before you consider chopping your hair into the short 'do that your grandma has, rescue your hair with some simple hair care methods. You will notice a difference.

Step 1

Use conditioner with high-quality ingredients. Damage that has been caused by years of abuse can't be undone in days, but some conditioners will drastically improve your hair's appearance. Good Housekeeping online recommends buying a conditioner that contains silicone for smoothness, polyquaternium or amino acids for strength, panthenol or pro-vitamins for moisture, and mineral oil or petrolatum for protection.

Step 2

Do a deep conditioning session as frequently as the product box recommends. For example, many hot oil hair products recommend repeating the process once a week. Another option for rehydration is a deep conditioning hair mask that contains cetyl alcohol.

Step 3

Stop using heated styling tools or use them infrequently. Hairdryers, straighteners, curlers and crimpers will dry out your hair over time or even burn it if the heat is too high. Use tools that are only a few years old; as tools age, they tend to heat up too much or too little. Apply a heat protector spray to absorb the heat instead of letting it directly damage your hair.

Step 4

Style your hair with an appropriate brush. When your hair is dry, brush it with one that has soft, widely spaced bristles to avoid ripping through tangles. For the same reason, don't use a brush on your hair when it is wet--use a wide-toothed comb on wet hair, and work on it in small segments from bottom to top.

Step 5

Get your hair trimmed regularly, especially if you want to have long hair. Though this may seem counter-intuitive to having long and flowing hair, it is a crucial step. As hair ages, it breaks more easily and the ends split. Visit the salon or trim your hair at home once a month.

Things You'll Need

  • Hot oil treatment or deep conditioning masque
