How to Eliminate Lip Lines

As women age, the delicate skin around their mouths begins to fill with fine lines and wrinkles. While many ladies find this upsetting in and of itself, it can become even worse when lipstick moves from the lips themselves and into these lip lines. A simple routine of applying lotion, moisturizer and foundation can make your lips look smooth and wrinkle-free.

Step 1

Smooth a glycolic acid lotion onto the affected area. This should be applied in the mornings after you wash your face. T he glycolic acid will promote the skin to slough off dry, dead cells that form lines and replace them with younger, smoother cells. Use care when applying the lotion, smoothing it right up to the lip line, but not onto the lips themselves.

Step 2

Use a moisturizer. Dr. Diana Bihova, a dermatologist in New York City, recommends applying the moisturizer about ten minutes before applying lip color. Smooth this above the lips in order to minimize lines even more. Using a moisturizer that contains sunscreen can minimize current lines and help prevent future lines from developing.

Step 3

Apply foundation to help hide lip lines. After the moisturizer is in place and has dried, spread a thin layer of foundation over the lip area. This helps to fill in lines and can also help prevent lipstick from migrating from the lips to these lines, further exacerbating the problem. Several companies currently sell a product called a lip fixative, which causes a slight swelling in the skin above the upper lip, thereby causing the lines to fill in.

Step 4

Apply some powder. This will help set the foundation or lip fixative and will help keep the color on your lips. Use sparingly.

Step 5

Apply a lip liner to lightly outline and fill in your lips. Because some lip pencils may bleed, Dr. Bihova recommends trying several brands and colors out in order to find the one that will stay set and looks best on you.

Step 6

Apply the lip color of your choice. Be careful to stay in the lines. Lightly blot with a tissue in order to further set the color.
