How to Cleanse the Colon System

The colon is an organ that's responsible for removing toxins from your body. Many health experts say that the colon does a sufficient job of removing unwanted toxins from the body on its own, but a few claim that the colon walls are lined with toxin buildup that can be removed through a thorough colon cleanse, leading to a drastic improvement in health and more productive weight-loss efforts. There are some very simple and natural ways to cleanse your colon right at home, without expensive products or procedures.

Step 1

Take a combination of bentonite and flaxseed supplements to start off a colon cleanse. Bentonite is a type of clay that becomes a gel when combined with water. In the colon, toxins bind themselves to the bentonite and are moved out of the bowels. Flaxseed also expands when mixed with water, and helps to remove toxins and sludge along the colon walls. Flaxseed is also beneficial in lowering cholesterol.

Mix a teaspoon of ground flaxseeds and a tablespoon of liquid bentonite in at least 8 oz. of water in the morning (roughly 30 minutes before breakfast) and again before going to bed. These supplements can be purchased at natural foods or health stores, and even in some grocery and drug stores in the natural foods aisles.

Step 2

Eat a diet that consists mostly of raw fruits and vegetables. Processed and cooked foods can create or increase toxins in the body. Also, raw fruits and vegetables will provide your body with vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes that will keep you feeling healthy and energized during your cleanse.

Step 3

Drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of water or juice each day to prevent dehydration and promote cleansing. This is essential in preventing dehydration and helping to flush toxins from the colon. Juices are beneficial in a cleanse because the sugars in them help to speed up bowel movements, and they can also provide vitamins and minerals to sustain energy and keep the body healthy.

Step 4

Add a fast to your cleanse to make it more effective and speed the cleansing process. Research various fasting options and pick one that you feel is the best fit for you (see Resources). Talk to your doctor before beginning a fast, since fasting is not always recommended and may be dangerous to your health.
