Pregnancy is an exciting time for a new mother-to-be. It also brings new and different symptoms, anxiety, aches and pains. During pregnancy it is advised to not take medication unless approved by your doctor and medically necessary. Some women find pre-natal massage to be an excellent method of alternative therapy for pain and discomfort. Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health, states the American Pregnancy Association. When looking for a massage therapist be sure to find one that has special training and experience in practicing pre-natal massage.
Hormone Regulation
Massage therapy is associated with relaxation, stress relief and mood regulation. Hormones such as norepinephrine and cortisol ("stress hormones") were reduced and dopamine and serotonin levels (low levels of these hormones are associated with depression) were increased in women who received bi-weekly massages for only five weeks, according to the American Pregnancy Association. These hormonal changes may lead to fewer complications during labor and delivery and a lower incidence of newborn complications.
Nerve Pain Relief
Many women experience sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy, due to the increased pressure the uterus places on surrounding nerves. This pain may be mild, or severe enough where it begins to impact daily tasks and lifestyle. Pre-natal massage is known to help significantly decrease the nerve pain associated with pregnancy.
Decrease in Edema
Edema (swelling) of the joints is a common discomfort during pregnancy. Many women experience swelling of the lower extremities, which usually worsens at night after being on their feet all day. Massage stimulates soft tissue to help release the build-up of excess fluid. If you are experiencing swelling of the hands and face, you may have a condition known as pre-eclampsia and should consult your physician.
