Botox is a common nonsurgical procedure used to treat wrinkles, headaches and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). Botox injections are made from botulinum neurotoxin, which is derived from bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. When injected into a muscle, Botox has the ability to block the production of acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter needed for muscle movement. This paralyzes the muscle. Although Botox is successful at treating many ailments, there are also potentially negative aspect of using the neurotoxin.
Side Effects
Botox injections, like most medical procedures have risks for side effects. The most common side effects include pain, bruising, headache, redness, swelling and nausea.
Temporary Nature
Another negative aspect of Botox injections is that there effects are only temporary. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the results of Botox typically only last three to four months before the action of Botox wears off on the muscles.
Costs
Because Botox injections are only temporary, cost is also a negative aspect of this treatment. According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery's 2005 survey, the average cost for Botox injections across the nation ranges from $377 to $510 for each shot. With multiple treatments needed, these costs can add up quickly.
Drooping Eyelids
One potential serious side effect of Botox injections is drooping eyelids (ptosis). Ptosis typically only occurs with injections around the eyes, which may allow the toxin to spill over into the eyelid muscles.
Toxin Spread
The same toxin used for Botox shots is responsible for an illness called botulism. In rare cases the Botulinum toxin from Botox may spread into the body, resulting in similar symptoms of the disease. These symptoms include muscle weakness, difficulty breathing and difficulty swallowing.
