1. Pain Without a Specific Cause is the Main Symptom
Intense pain in specific spots on the body that has no apparent cause is the primary symptom of fibromyalgia. The pain is usually present in more than one spot and becomes much worse when the affected spots are touched or pressed using gentle pressure. Fibromyalgia pain is much worse than the muscle and joint aches that are common in the flu and some other inflammatory conditions. At times, the pain may be so severe that you may find it difficult to wear clothes or lay under blankets in a bed. These episodes of pain can last for several months at a time, and though they usually go away eventually, the chances are high that the episodes will recur throughout your life.
2. Poor Quality of Sleep Is Another Symptom
Most people with fibromyalgia have a hard time getting to sleep and staying asleep. This is mainly due to being in pain. The pain may become worse if you roll over in bed and lay on a tender spot. In fact, you could be awakened from your sleep by the simple act of turning onto your back or side. If you have tender spots all over your body, you may find it difficult to find a comfortable position in which to sleep, and the weight of your blankets may be too painful for you to handle. As a result, you don't get much sleep, and the sleep you do get is of poor quality.
3. You May Experienced Heightened Sensitivity
A large number of people with fibromyalgia find that they become highly sensitive to light and sound when they are having a flare of the disease. If this happens to you, you may experience unusual eye pain when standing in direct sunlight. For the most sensitive people, even the light of a lamp is uncomfortable. Loud noises can cause you to feel sick or cause your body pain to worsen, as well. This heightened sensitivity will last for the duration of the episode of fibromyalgia.
