According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine, homeopathy was developed in Germany and has been used in practice since the early 1800s in the United States. Homeopathic doctors promote wellness and cure illness by stimulating the body's natural healing processes with small amounts of highly diluted, natural remedies. Homeopathy or homeopathic doctors take their remedies from many different natural substances like plants, minerals and animals. In the United States, there are no federal licensing laws or similar standards between states.
American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP)
The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians was formed in 1985 and is a national professional society that represents homeopathic (or naturopathic) physicians in the United States. Its members are graduates of accredited training programs and universities and at least license-eligible as physicians in the United States. Their "Find a Doctor" search provides a listing of homeopathic physicians within certain distances from the zip code or city/state information you provide. You can also search for homeopathic physicians that are specialists in certain health categories, like cancer or mental health.
American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA)
The American Holistic Medical Association provides another well-established listing of referrals to homeopathic physicians by location and specialty. You can search their referral database with your zip code or by specialty and state to find a provider near to you. There is also an international referral listing that you can search. This association is the oldest in the United States (established in 1978). The AHMA offers a Board Certification in Integrative Holistic Medicine via an annual examination offered to practitioners and its physician-members.
State-specific Homeopathic Physician Referrals
Many states have their own homeopathic physician associations and referral directories and make them available on the web for free directory searches. Examples are the Vermont Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the North Carolina Association of Naturopathic Physicians and the California Naturopathic Doctors Association. Your state may have its own association and directory and it's worth a general web search to find any state-affiliated referral sources and information.
