A home remedy detox program is designed to cleanse the body by eliminating or neutralizing toxins. This is done through the colon, kidneys, liver, lungs, lymph and skin.
The usual metabolic process continuously gets rid of accumulated toxins, but because of certain environmental pollutants, bodily systems can become overloaded. Feelings of congestion and lethargy, weight gain, skin problems, frequent headaches, constipation, and sinus problems could all be signs of a toxic overload.
A detox program helps eliminate waste deposits in the body and starts the rebalancing process.

Water

Water is essential to life. It carries nutrients, vitamins, minerals, proteins and chemical messengers to every part of the body and enables certain organs to perform their life-sustaining work.
The average person eliminates about 2 to 3 quarts of water every 24 hours, and needs that much replacement water every day. It is vital to the body's cleansing process, and works by lubricating and flushing wastes from all cells, cleanses the internal organs, and helps eliminate toxins from the bloodstream.

24-Hour Cleanse

A 24-hour cleanse is a safe and easy way to get started on a home remedy detox program. Water, juice and herbal teas allow for normal daily activities.
Squeeze about 2 Tbsp. fresh lemon or lime juice in a cup of hot water. Add about 1 Tbsp. of pure maple syrup and a pinch of cayenne pepper. This is most effective when taken first thing in the morning, and 3 or 4 more times throughout the day. Supplement this with a variety of herbal teas, which can be sweetened with honey or maple syrup, and fresh-squeezed juices. Apples, oranges, lemons, pineapple and papaya all have detoxifying properties.

Sauna and Steam

Overheating therapy is an ancient detoxifying technique. Steam baths and saunas from Scandinavia to sweat lodges of the American Indians are some of the ways overheating therapy is used.
The skin has millions of pores that constantly allow toxins to exit the body. When the skin is exposed to heat, the blood vessels in the skin dilate, activating the sweat glands. This brings water to the skin's surface, and when it evaporates, it draws heat and toxins from the body.

Exercise and Bodywork

Exercise is an important aspect of detoxification. Exercising to the point of perspiration allows the body to expel toxins through the skin, which is the body's largest organ of elimination.
Exercise also helps to stimulate the metabolism and burns up excess body fat. The circulatory and lymphatic systems are also stimulated with exercise. The lymph fluid, which eliminates toxins, depends entirely on exercise for circulation.
Seaweed is effective for a home remedy detox program, and is available in several different forms for topical application. It has electromagnetic properties that help release toxins and excess fluid from congested cells. Using seaweed in a bath or body wrap allows rich nutrients, such as potassium and iodine to enter through the skin and restore balance in the body.

Enemas for a Congested Colon

Enemas use water to flush and cleanse the colon, and are an important part of a home remedy detox program. Water enemas release old colon waste which can cause constipation.
Certain herbs can be used for specific results. Garlic helps to kill harmful bacteria and parasites. Spirulina detoxifies the blood, and aloe vera heals tissues associated with irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulitis.
Coffee enemas stimulate the gallbladder and liver to help remove toxins. Coffee enemas also help produce enzyme activity for healthy red blood cell formation.
