Ingrown hairs can appear on the body anywhere that the hair gets trapped underneath the skin. Ingrown hairs occur most commonly in areas that are frequently shaved, waxed or constantly rubbed against clothing. The ingrown hairs can become inflamed and swollen and can resemble large pimples or boils if left untreated. After the affected hairs heal, they can often leave behind unsightly scars or discolorations that are typically drier and more tough than the surrounding skin. Luckily, scars left behind from ingrown hairs can be diminished.
Step 1
Soften and loosen the scarred skin cells by applying an olive oil steam to the area.
Olive oil is noncomedogenic and can be used to soften skin cells without clogging the pores or making ingrown hairs worse. Spread 2 tbsp. of olive oil over the affected area. Use your fingers to massage the oil into the skin for three to four minutes. Place a very hot, steaming washcloth over the area, leaving it there until the washcloth cools. Use the washcloth to wipe off the oil. Repeat two times per day.
Step 2
Exfoliate the softened skin cells. Pour 3 tbsp. of baking soda into a bowl and mix 2 tsp. of water into it, effectively making a paste. Spread the baking soda paste onto the area affected by scarring, and use your fingers to massage it around for two minutes. Rinse off the area well with warm water. Repeat up to two times per day.
Step 3
Tone the skin with lemon juice, which is high in vitamin C and can increase the rate at which skin cells are sloughed away. Soak a washcloth in concentrated lemon juice, and place the washcloth over the scarred area. Allow the washcloth to remain on the skin for at least 15 minutes. Remove the washcloth and let the skin air-dry. Repeat two times per day.
