A slap shot is one of the most effective manners to shoot the puck and score a goal in hockey. A well-timed and well-struck slap shot can result in a goal, an opportunity for a deflection or a rebound opportunity. It can also serve notice to the goaltender that a player can fire the puck at speeds approaching 100 mph. That knowledge can cause the goaltender to think about self-preservation instead of stopping the puck, thereby giving the offensive team a better chance to score.
Step 1
Line up perpendicular to the goal. If you are a right-handed shooter, your left shoulder should be facing the goaltender and your left skate needs to be directly underneath your left shoulder. The puck should be even or a few inches in front of your front skate.
Step 2
Draw the blade of your stick back to shoulder height. Once your blade is at the height of your right shoulder (for a right-handed shooter), your weight should be on your right side.
Step 3
Start shifting your weight to your front side. As you do this, bring the blade of the stick down on the puck, closing the blade as you make impact with the putt. This will create a spin on the puck as it leaves the blade of your stick that will cause it to fly through the air as quickly as possible.
Step 4
Follow through on your shot. After you make contact with the puck, you need to keep your head down and follow through all the way until your stick is at least the height of your left hip. Once you finish your swing, skate toward the goal because you may be in a position to pick up your own rebound if your original shot did not hit the net.
