3 Ways to Understand Teenagers' Moods

1. Keep a Covert Log Tracking Ups and Downs

Though it may feel sneaky, parents of especially moody teenagers should keep a journal logging their child's moods. This log can provide crucial information regarding patterns of behavior, and you can use the information you gain to help your teen break free of emotional turmoil. For instance, if you notice many "ups" during the weekend but many "downs" during the school week, chances are something at school is distressing your child, such as an overwhelming amount of homework or a struggle to understand new material. Once you notice this trend, you can more easily tell what's causing her moody behavior.

2. Discover Events that Lead to Changes in Moods

A covert log, along with other detective work, can help you discover why your teen is temperamental, unhappy or nervous. While he may find it impossible to come to you with the problem or may not even be able to determine himself what's upsetting him, a persistent parent can track down the problem. Do more than ask your son what's bothering him--talk with his teachers and other adults who interact with him. Do not, however, make it worse for your son by posing intrusive or interrogating questions to his friends. Instead, listen for clues when he talks about his peers. Does his face darken when he mentions a particular person? Does his body language "close up" while speaking about a certain classmate or teacher? Strive to heighten your awareness.

3. Distinguish Between Moodiness and Teenage Depression or Bipolar Disorder

While some degree of teenage moodiness is normal and manageable within the family, teenage depression is not. Depression, bipolar disorder and other mental disorders are not uncommon in teens and are serious issues that should be dealt with appropriately and as soon as possible. If you suspect your daughter is suffering from more than typical teenage moods, have her assessed by a mental health professional. If she's diagnosed with a mental illness or condition, obtain psychological treatment for her.
