Symptoms of Pneumonia in Toddlers

Pneumonia is a bacterial or viral infection that primarily affects the respiratory system. The infection causes fluid to build up in the air sacs of the lungs. Symptoms of pneumonia in toddlers may resemble a moderate to serious cold. Recovery is usual complete within a few days, especially with the use of antibiotics. Viral pneumonia may take two to four weeks. The University of Michigan (UMICH) points out that recovery is gradual.

Fever

Bacterial pneumonia symptoms in a toddler may occur suddenly and lead to a high fever, often over 104 degrees Fahrenheit, states the UMICH. It is possible for a toddler to experience shivering or chills with the fever. Fever-reducing medications may be useful in lowering a toddler's temperature, but use only under the advice of a medical professional.

Breathing Symptoms

Due to the fluid building up in the lungs, a toddler may struggle to breathe. Lung inflammation may lead to breathing that is labored or noisy. Rapid breathing or wheezing is common. Rattling while breathing is not usually a sign of pneumonia, explains the UMICH. Signs of labored breathing include flaring nostrils with each breath or tightening of the skin against the ribs.

Cough

A cough that lasts over three weeks is a serious symptom of pneumonia that requires medical treatment. Coughing, whether it produces mucus or not, is a normal sign of pneumonia. Dr. Alan Greene, pediatrician and founder of DrGreene.com, explains that pneumonia is often the result of a cold or other illness. A runny nose with a cough may precede the respiratory symptoms.

Other Symptoms

Beginning with the initial illness, such as a cold, a toddler may rapidly or gradually get worse. She may appear sicker, decline food or become lethargic. Vomiting and diarrhea are possible, reports BabyCenter.com. A rapid pulse, bluish nails or lips are signs of pneumonia and should be treated by a medical professional.
