Diverticula are small pouches found in various sections of the digestive system. This includes the esophagus, small and large intestine and the stomach. The development of diverticula is common, especially in individuals over the age of 40. The Mayo Clinic explains that diverticulosis is the condition used to describe the development of the pouches. When one or more diverticula become inflamed and/or infected, the result is diverticulitis.
Pain
One of the most common symptoms of diverticulitis is pain. It can occur suddenly, without warning. The pain may be severe or it may start as a mild ache. The pain is often found on the left side of the stomach, resembling appendicitis, states the Diverticulitis Symptoms site. Pain that begins mildly can increase in intensity over the course of several days. It is not uncommon for the pain intensity to fluctuate, state medical experts at the Mayo Clinic.
Bowel Changes
Diverticulitis can lead to several changes in bowel habits. This includes diarrhea and constipation. Any other unusual bowel problems can be due to the infection or inflammation of the diverticula. Individuals may have more frequent bowel movements in a day but the stool may be of normal consistency, instead of watery, like diarrhea. Bleeding from the rectum is an uncommon sign of diverticulitis but it is possible.
Other Stomach Issues
Less common, is abdominal bloating resulting from the irritation of the diverticula. Frequent vomiting or nausea may accompany any of the other symptoms. The abdomen can be tender to the touch or made more painful with movement. Other minor, but significant signs of diverticulitis include an increase in stomach tenderness when bending over, wearing tight clothes or wearing things like a belt. Some individuals may notice an increase in urination or trouble urinating at all, states Diverticulitis Symptoms. Serious signs of diverticulitis include swelling of the abdomen or if the stomach becomes tight and rigid.
Fever
A mild fever may accompany diverticulitis, especially if it is the result of an infection of the diverticula. Sweating and chills that accompany a fever are all serious signs that require medical attention.
