Created by Dr. Mark Hyman, the UltraMetabolism diet is a weight loss and dietary health program that focuses on improving the metabolic rate of the body through diet modification, increased activity and stress reduction. The program takes a holistic approach to treating obesity and weight-related illnesses. It is based on nutrigenomics, the study of the effect of food on genetic activity within the body.
Principles
The basic concept behind the diet is that eating certain foods alters brain and body chemistry and programs the body to behave in a certain way. This can include regulating metabolism. The UltraMetabolism program uses this information to modify the diet to improve nutrition and reduce appetite while stimulating the body to increase its metabolic rate.
Testing
An important part of the UltraMetabolism program is testing for specific metabolic and biochemical imbalances. Tests for oxidation; the existence of heavy metals and other toxins; thyroid, liver, adrenal and cell function; and inflammatory activity are included. These can help to identify specific problems that can then be treated using the diet program.
Foods
UltraMetabolism eliminates certain "bad" foods, which impair metabolism, and increases the intake of "good" foods to improve metabolism. People on the diet increase their intake of whole, unprocessed foods with low glycemic index ratings, high fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and phytonutrients, which provide antioxidants. Sugars and refined foods, especially those made with trans fats, are greatly reduced or eliminated.
Supplements
Herbal supplements such as ginseng, cinnamon, licorice root and green tea are recommended to increase the metabolic rate. Other supplements, including vitamins C and B complex, creatine, coenzyme Q10, L-carnitine and bioflavonoids are also added to the diet to improve liver and thyroid function, reduce the effects of stress and improve overall health.
Eating Habits
Those on the program eat early, frequently and regularly, with three meals and two snacks per day. A breakfast with a good portion of protein is considered the most important meal of the day. Nothing is eaten within two to three hours before bed time. Portion control is strongly recommended.
Stress Management
Controlling the sources of stress is considered an important factor in managing weight and is part of the UltraMetabolism diet. As well as proper nutrition, the program recommends plenty of aerobic exercise, adequate sleep, exposure to sunlight and active relaxation techniques to reduce the effects of stress on the body. The program also encourages reducing exposure to external stressors such as allergens and household chemicals.
Inflammation and Oxidation
The UltraMetabolism program also points to inflammation and oxidation within the body as a contributing factor in poor health and weight gain. It recommends foods and supplements that have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, including plenty of fruits and green vegetables, and herbs such as ginger, milk thistle, rosemary and turmeric.
