Putting a stop to losing hair and then taking on the task of new hair growth is certainly a long humbling process. Hair loss for any reason is often difficult on the ego. You also have to worry about how to manage your appearance as you are losing hair. Many people who are experiencing hair loss have been through the process before and know the basic tips for coping with the time that it takes for new hair to grow. If your hair loss is not the result of a medical condition, other reasons for hair loss need to be investigated for maximizing the regrowth process.
Step 1
Stop any behaviors that may cause hair loss, such as any chemical processing of your hair or pulling your hair tightly.
Step 2
Ask your physician to change your prescription if you suspect a certain medication is causing your hair loss.
Step 3
Ask your physician to evaluate your overall health for any conditions that may cause hair loss.
Step 4
Use products that will attach to the receptors in the hair follicles and reduce the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the natural metabolite of the human body that is the main reason for hair loss. Inhibiting the production of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into DHT and reducing the substances that produce, the enzyme 5-alpha reductase can naturally stimulate hair growth. Various vitamins and herbs such as saw palmetto, nettle root, Vitamin E and rangoli henna may help promote hair growth.
Step 5
Use various hair care products, which are recommended by your stylist and by William Rassman, M.D., medical director and founder of the New Hair Institute for hair regrowth. Although Nioxin is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it is used to promote the growth of hair. Nioxin, System 1 and 2 are for fine hair while System 5 and 7 are for medium to coarse hair. Tricomin also offers shampoos and conditioners, which can help generate the regrowth process. Other products on the market include Dermenodex, Revita Hair Growth Shampoo, Energizer Treatment Shampoo and Keratase all claim to be beneficial.
Step 6
Move to more aggressive measures, such as the use of products that can prevent the development of common baldness. Minoxidil, sold under the brand Rogaine, is available without a prescription. The product is applied to the scalp. A prescription medication--finasteride--comes in a pill and is available only for men.
Tips and Warnings
- If all else has failed, you may be ready to investigate hair transplants. This procedure is drastic and costly, but, in many cases, it is the only way to regrow new hair.
