Keeping your baseball mitt clean will ensure that it lasts longer and stays in good condition. If you play regularly, make it a habit to clean your glove after each game. This is especially important if the glove gets wet or muddy.
Step 1
Brush away any grass, dried mud or debris that is stuck in the seams or the palm of the mitt. Don't scratch or use any tools, as this can damage the leather, cause tears or loosen out the threads.
Step 2
Wet a cloth slightly and use it to clean any remaining dirt. Do not use soap or too much water, as this can damage the leather. Once you've finished removing any remaining dirt, let the mitt air dry. Don't leave it to dry in the sun or near a heat source; this can crack the leather.
Step 3
Apply a light coat of untreated petroleum jelly to the mitt. Work the jelly into the seams, making sure you cover the laces as well. If you're cleaning your mitt to put it away until the next season, apply petroleum jelly to the inside of the glove as well. The jelly will absorb any remaining dirt and sweat accumulation and hydrate the leather at the same time.
Step 4
Wait a few minutes to let the petroleum jelly penetrate the leather and then clean any excess with a clean dry rag. Let the glove air dry again.
