Lexapro is a drug used to treat adults suffering from major depression or generalized anxiety disorder. The generic name is escitalopram. The medication is not approved for use in adolescents or children. Complications associated with Lexapro include increased risk of suicide and increased bleeding if taken with some common pain medications. Additionally, Lexapro is reported to cause sexual dysfunction in males.
Suicide
Antidepressants, including Lexapro, may increase the risk of suicide among teenagers and young adults. An article published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says the risk is higher in individuals with a history of attempted suicide or with a family history of suicidal thoughts or actions.
Increased Bleeding
Some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications that are commonly used for pain can cause inflammation in the stomach and small intestine. As reported by drugs.com, concomitant use of Lexapro may further aggravate this condition and lead to an increased risk of bleeding.
Sexual Dysfunction
As indicated on the National Institutes of Health website, Lexapro has been reported to cause sexual dysfunction; namely delayed ejaculation, decreased libido and anorgasmia (inability to achieve orgasm). The NIH cited the results found in a placebo-controlled clinical trial that showed the incidence of ejaculation disorders in the study group administered Lexapro was 12 percent, compared with 1 percent for the placebo group.
Lexapro and Pregnancy
Lexapro can pass to newborn babies during breastfeeding. It can also pass into the developing fetus if the drug is use in the third trimester phase of pregnancy. Drugs.com reports that animal studies have shown the drug can increase the risks of spontaneous abortions including teratogenic effects and adverse effects on fetal development at doses administered above human therapeutic levels.
