How to Prevent Skin From Aging

There are several environmental factors that can cause the premature aging of the skin. Signs of aging that appear on the skin include wrinkles, thin and transparent skin and sagging areas. Because the skin becomes thinner as you age, you are at an increased risk of skin injury. You can take steps while still in your teens to prevent your skin from showing premature signs of aging. If you do have aged skin, you can speak to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon about procedures used to improve the look of the skin.

Step 1

Stop smoking. When you smoke cigarettes, you can cause cellular changes that can make you develop premature aged skin. Avoid smoking or quit to prevent wrinkles and thin skin.

Step 2

Change your sleeping position. If you have your face rested in the same position on your pillow for years, lines can become permanently etched into your face. Try to sleep on your back in order to keep this from occurring.

Step 3

Avoid facial exercises. Some individuals may perform a variety of facial expressions as a way to keep their skin young. Repetitive movements can actually lead to premature signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles.

Step 4

Apply sunblock on a year-round basis. Each time that you go outside, slather on sunblock with SPF 30 or higher. Clothing pieces and hats can be used to block the sun's damaging rays as well. Avoid tanning beds and sunbathing. If possible, limit the amount of time that you spend outside when the sun's rays are the strongest from approximately noon to 4 o'clock.

Step 5

Keep your skin well hydrated. The skin can remain supple longer by apply a moisturizing lotion on a daily basis. Drink plenty of water as well by having six to eight glasses per day. Use lukewarm water to bathe because very hot showers can dry out the skin.
