How to Get Rid of an Age Spot

Age spots are blemishes on the skin that are also referred to as sun spots or liver spots. They are flat against the skin and typically have a black or brown appearance. Age spots are more common in those over age 40 and appear as a result of an overproduction of pigment in the skin. They are non-cancerous, but can be a cosmetic concern for individuals. If you are not sure that the mark is an age spot, consult a dermatologist to examine the blemish.

Step 1

Choose a skin lightening cream. These products are available over the counter and can be applied to diminish the appearance of an age spot. Choose a version that contains hydroquinone, kojic acid, or glycolic acid. Some brand examples include Derma E Skin Lighten Cream and Arbonne Revelage Age Spot Brightening Cream.

Step 2

Apply the skin lightening cream on a daily basis. Use the cream on clean and dry skin and massage it into the skin using your fingertips.

Step 3

Continue to apply the skin lightening cream for several months. It can take several months to penetrate the skin enough to permanently lighten the age spot. If you develop any skin irritation after prolonged use, discontinue the product.

Step 4

Receive a prescription strength treatment from your doctor. If the over-the-counter skin lightening cream is not strong enough to fade the age spot, a prescription strength form of hydroquinone can be given. Your doctor may use a topical retinoid as well to get rid of the age spots.

Step 5

Speak to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon about more aggressive treatment options. If you do not want to wait several months to notice results from topical treatments, you can undergo a cosmetic procedure to remove them. Laser therapy can be performed to destroy the excess pigment causing the age spot. Cryotherapy involves the application of liquid nitrogen to get rid of the extra melanin. During dermabrasion, the area that contains the age spot is sanded down using a rotating brush.
