Sprint triathlons are triathlons covering a relatively short distance. These events are ideal for those competitors new to the sport, as they are shorter than most other triathlon distances. Because they require less training and experience than longer races, sprint triathlons are very popular endurance competitions.

Triathlon

A triathlon is a long distance race involving three disciplines: swimming, cycling and running. The first modern triathlon was completed at Mission Bay, San Diego, California, on September 25, 1974. Since that time, triathlons have become a popular form of competition or simply as a way of getting in shape. They are now held throughout the world.

Sprint Triathlons

While there are several triathlon distances, including youth-, intermediate-, long- and ultra-distance, sprint triathlons are a becoming a common form of triathlon. Sprint triathlons are short-distance triathlons, usually consisting of a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and a 5-kilometer run. Distances may vary slightly based on the course, but the above standards are usually adhered to. This is half the distance of the triathlon run at the Olympics.

Race Day

Competitors will arrive early to check-in, receive their race number and set up their transition area, a designated area where racers will store their bike, sneakers and any other equipment needed for the next stage of the race. Athletes may all start the race together. However, in most races, where there are a large number of participants, athletes are usually divided into sub-groups, by divisions such as professional and amateur, age, or sex.

The Race

The swim portion always begins the race. Starts will either be mass starts, where all the members of a particular group will start together, or wave starts, where a small number of racers will begin every few minutes. When done swimming, athletes will exit the water and run to the transition area. The bike stage runs around a pre-marked course, and usually finishes where it began. Finally, the running stage is completed, commonly run along a paved road course, culminating at the finish line.

Training

Triathlons take months of training in order to fully prepare, especially for a first-time competitor. Competing in a triathlon is a physically demanding task. Even training for a short-distance triathlon, such as a sprint, can require excessive training. Endurance sports require extensive cardiovascular training. Without having the endurance to compete, a triathlon is impossible. Triathlon competitors should make sure they can swim, bikes and run for an extended amount of time. Aside from the endurance, developing muscle is also a key component to the training regime. Because each discipline involves the use of different muscles, developing muscle throughout the body is very important.
