It's easier to imagine why fast food is not a good idea. Fast food is high in fat, calories and cholesterol. It provides little nutrition and can lead to easy weight gain. People tend to eat fast food because it's easy and convenient, so avoiding fast food is a question of planning your days well.
Step 1
Eat at home whenever possible. To make it cheaper and easier, shop with a list and stick to staples such as rice, beans and vegetables as the basis of your meals. Add vegetables and meats as needed. Cook on the weekends and freeze leftovers for the rest of the week, so you'll have food ready to go and won't be tempted to stop for fast food on the way home.
Step 2
Bring your own food to work or when you're going on road trips. Rest stops are particularly notorious for having only fast food available. Make wraps and sandwiches at home or take along fruits, trail mix or wheat crackers.
Step 3
Identify the times or situations in which you tend to buy fast food. This could be evenings after a long day at work, on the weekends or during road trips with the kids. After you know your weak times, you'll be able to plan for them and come up with alternatives.
Step 4
Allow yourself a break every now and then. If you crave fast foods frequently, have a small serving once a week so you don't feel deprived. Choose the healthiest possible option available. For example, a chicken wrap is better than a bucket of fried chicken. Order from the kids' menu so your portions are smaller.
Step 5
Stop by a local grocery store when on vacation or on the go. As you drive into town, make it a goal to stock up on snacks so you don't get hungry when you're in the middle of nowhere and only fast food is available.
Step 6
Make it easier to prepare meals at home. A slow cooker, an outdoor BBQ or a small electric grill can help you prepare a meal in just minutes and without much intervention. You can simply put the food to cook while you're doing something else.
