How Do I Get My Baby to Sleep in His Crib?

Many parents struggle with getting their baby to sleep in his own bed. Whether you have a baby who wants to sleep in his swing or one who wants to be held while sleeping, not sleeping in his bed can lead to tired parents. Once your child has successfully made it to the crib mattress, the next battle will involve keeping him there for as many nighttime hours as possible. Remember to remain patient with your baby while you teach him to sleep in his bed.

Step 1

Set a bedtime routine that involves a bath massage with lotion. Start this routine no more than one hour before you want your baby in bed.

Step 2

Swaddle your baby tightly with both arms by your baby's side. Many babies will fight swaddling at first but will quickly adjust and enjoy swaddling.

Step 3

Play white noise from a machine or compact disc. White noise includes hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, clothes dryers, rain and ocean sounds.

Step 4

Sit in a dark room with your baby while feeding him. If he does not fall asleep during his feeding you should gently rock or bounce him until he can barely keep his eyes open.

Step 5

Lay your baby down gently. Keeping him swaddled will keep him from becoming startled during the transition to his crib.

Step 6

Comfort him should he cry but do not pick him up. Continue to comfort him every 15 to 20 minutes until he falls completely asleep.

Step 7

When he wakes, do not turn on lights. Tend to his needs without interacting heavily with him.

Step 8

Repeat the process to get your baby back in bed during the night.

Tips and Warnings

  • Allow your baby to practice sleeping in his bed during nap time. Swaddle your baby in a blanket that is appropriate for the temperature in his room.
  • Never shake a baby out of frustration.
