Acne scarring results when acne pustules, papules, cysts and nodules are constantly popped and picked. The skin is damaged by the popping, and leaves behind unsightly areas of skin discoloration and dryness. In order to diminish the appearance of acne scars and skin discoloration, a regimen can be used that will soften the discolored skin cells, scrub away the softened skin, and increase the rate at which the skin is turned over.
Step 1
Soften acne scars by applying an olive oil facial. Smooth 2 tbsp. of olive oil onto your skin. Massage the oil into your skin using small, circular finger movements. After three minutes, place a steaming washcloth over the areas most effected by scarring. Wipe off the oil after the washcloth cools down. Repeat two times per day.
Step 2
Scrub away the softened scars by applying a natural exfoliant. In a small bowl, combine 1 tbsp. of baking soda, 1 tbsp. of ground oats, and 2 tbsp. of honey. Spread the mixture onto your skin, and massage it in for two minutes. Wipe the scrub back into the bowl, and rinse off your skin well with warm water. Repeat twice per day after applying the oil facial steam.
Step 3
Increase skin cell turnover by applying a Vitamin C toner. Pour 8 oz. of concentrated lemon juice into an empty, clean spray bottle. Spray your skin liberally with the juice, and let the skin dry naturally. Once dry, spray your skin a second time to ensure that the skin is sufficiently covered. Let your skin dry again. Repeat the process two times per day after applying the skin scrub.
Tips and Warnings
- Olive oil is a non-comedogenic oil, and can be used on the skin to soften skin cells without causing the pores to become clogged. Baking soda, oats and honey are natural exfoliants that can slough off softened, scarred skin cells without scratching or scraping the skin. Avoid using abrasive exfoliants, such as ground peach pits, sand or salt, which can damage the surface of the skin. Lemon juice is very high in Vitamin C, and can help speed up the rate at which the skin's surface turns over. When the skin turn's over more quickly, new skin cells are created at a faster rate, while the rate at which the dead, scarred skin cells are sloughed away is sped up.
