How to Get Rid of Puffiness Under the Eyes

Puffiness under the eyes can come from a few different causes so there are a few different methods of addressing the problem. There are a few simple steps that can be taken from the comfort of your own home to reduce the puffiness under your eyes.

Step 1

Place tea bags over your eyes and rest them there for 10 to 15 minutes. Choose any tea that you like, or just pick a chamomile tea for extra relaxation. Wrap the tea bags in tissues before placing them on your eyes to prevent staining your skin. Teas contain an ingredient known as tannin, which helps to reduce puffiness under the eyes.

Step 2

Use a cold compress on your eyes (especially helpful in the morning). Completely wet a washcloth with cool water and rest it on your eyes. When the cloth becomes warm, remove it and repeat the process three or four more times.

Step 3

Slice a raw potato or cucumber and refrigerate them so they are cool. Relax with your head tilted back or lay down and rest the slices on your eyes for 15 to 20 minutes. Take the slices off your eyes and rinse your eyes with warm water. Apply a gentle eye cream to your eyes.

Step 4

If you suffer from allergies, consider taking an allergy medication to remedy puffy eyes. Follow the directions as provided by the manufacturer of the medication or your physician. Puffy eyes are a common side effect of allergies and so addressing your allergies may be the solution you need. While many over-the-counter medicines are sufficient, talk to your doctor about a prescription if you feel you have more serious allergy needs.

Step 5

Get seven to nine hours of sleep each night. To prevent puffiness from fluid build-up in your face, sleep with an extra pillow under your head.

Step 6

Prevent water retention in your face. Drink eight to 10 glasses of water every day. Refrain from smoking or drinking beverages containing alcohol or caffeine.
