How to Teach Children to Be Organized at School

You might be frustrated with helping your children stay organized at school when you continually notice that they are missing homework assignments or forgetting books at school. Regardless of the source of your desire to teach your children to be more organized at school, the benefits of doing so range from making your life easier to helping them achieve higher grades. Teaching your children to be more organized at school can also help boost their self-confidence and help them to develop a clearer mind.

Step 1

Lead by example and organize your home when the children are young. Understand that even though they won't know what is happening when they are young, it will be much easier to teach them to be organized at school early on if they are used to having an organized home. Create a place for everything. Help your toddlers and preschoolers sort their toys into logical groupings and put them away in buckets, drawers or on shelves after they are done playing with them. Make sure you stay organized with your own items by clearing counters of old mail and keeping up with laundry and other household chores.

Step 2

Buy pencil pouches for your children for them to store their writing materials. Help them separate each of their notebooks so that they can use one for each subject easily. Purchase a large binder instead if it feels more appropriate and help your child use the separators that come with it to assign each section of the binder to a specific subject group.

Step 3

Purchase an assignment book or planner for school. Tell your children that you expect them to record given homework assignments. Check to ensure they have all the necessary materials to complete the nightly assignments before leaving school and make sure to ask them about their homework assignments as soon as you pick them up from school.

Step 4

Teach your children how to plan ahead. Assist them in completing their long-term assignments for school by having them break the tasks up into smaller pieces that can be finished over a specific time. Teach them how to make a timeline that indicates when each part of the project will get done.
