How to Reduce Eye Puffiness

Puffy eyes are typically the result of certain lifestyle choices. As you age, you are also more prone to bags in this area. Certain medical conditions, such as allergies, can cause puffiness as well. Consult your doctor if you suffer from puffiness in the eye area regularly. You may need an antihistamine to control your allergies and to prevent the problem from occurring. A concealer can help hide the condition as you treat the area.

Step 1

Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Getting enough shuteye can reduce eye puffiness.

Step 2

Sleep on an elevated surface by using an extra pillow or lifting your mattress so that the head of the bed is elevated. When you lie on an incline, you prevent fluid from collecting in the facial area.

Step 3

Reduce swelling by placing two washcloths on your eyes that have been moistened with cold water. Leave them on in 15-minute intervals over the course of the day until the swelling goes down. In lieu of compresses, place cucumber slices or cool, moist teabags on the eyes.

Step 4

Move fluids away from the eyes by using your fingertips to softly tap or rub the lids. Be careful not to rub too hard. Spend a couple of minutes per day massaging the skin in this area.

Step 5

Limit your salt intake by reducing the amount of chips, fast food, Chinese food, processed meals and canned foods you consume. Foods high in sodium cause you to retain water.

Tips and Warnings

  • As you age, you may develop sagging skin around the eyes that does not go away with home treatments. Eyelid surgery done by a plastic surgeon is one remedy. During this procedure, excess skin and fat will be removed from around the eyes. Stitches are hidden by the lower eyelids.
