3 Ways to Prevent Runners' Nipple

1. Runner's Nipple Defined

Runner's nipple is caused by the chafing of a sweat-soaked top on the chest, particularly during long summer runs. If you have ever gone for a long run in a cotton T-shirt or sports bra, you are probably familiar with runner's nipple.

2. Invest in the Best (Fabrics)

There are several ways to prevent runner's nipple. Although high performance fabrics made by companies such as Under Armour are typically a bit pricier than most cotton T-shirts, it is well worth the investment to avoid this extremely painful condition. This type of clothing wicks the sweat away from the body, thus preventing chafing from occurring during a long run. Men can avoid runner's nipple by running without a shirt (don't forget the sunscreen). Women should make sure that their sports bra fits snugly, as an ill-fitting sports bra can cause discomfort.

3. Lube Up

Another way to avoid runner's nipple, or chafing anywhere else on the body, is to apply a lubricant, such as Vaseline or Bodyglide to potentially affected areas. Some people also recommend covering the nipple with a band aid to prevent chafing, although removal of the band aid can be painful if you have a hairy chest. Also, the band aid may not adhere to the skin for the duration of the run.
