Amlodipine Besylate Side Effects

Amlodipine besylate (Norvasc) is a medication that has multiple effects on the cardiovascular system. This medication is in a group of medications known as calcium channel blockers. Calcium channels are receptors located in various areas of the cardiovascular system that, when blocked, result in relaxed blood vessels and a decreased heart rate. This leads to a decreased blood pressure and an overall decreased workload on the heart. While bmlodipine Besylate is effective in treating high blood pressure and chest pain, it may cause adverse side effects.

Cardiovascular System Side Effects

While amlodipine besylate is designed to improve the function of the cardiovascular system, it may cause other unwanted side effects on the heart. According to the Mayo Clinic, the drug can cause an irregular, pounding heartbeat or chest pain--although this side effect is rare. In addition, amlodipine besylate may cause swelling in your extremities, easy bruising or bleeding. These are not normal effects of amlodipine besylate and your doctor should be aware that this medication is causing these side effects.

Nervous System Side Effects

According to Drugs.com, amlodipine besylate may cause side effects on the nervous system. These effects include fainting, headache, dizziness, spinning sensation, drowsiness, depression, nervousness, insomnia and strange dreams. These effects occur because there are also calcium channels in the nervous system that may become blocked by the action of amlodipine besylate, and altering these receptors can result in these unwanted side effects. Let your doctor know if you are having these nervous system side effects, because he may be able to alter your dose or prescribe a different medication.

Digestive System Side Effects

Amlodipine besylate may cause adverse effects on the gastrointestinal tract. These effects occur because calcium channels are also present in the lining of your stomach and intestines. If these receptors are altered, then side effects may occur. These effects include diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, weight changes, stomach pain and loss of appetite, according to Drugs.com. Be sure that you are taking this medication as directed to avoid these unwanted effects.

Other Side Effects

Drugs.com states that amlodipine besylate may also cause jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), warmth or redness under your skin, joint pain, muscle pain or an increase in urination. Alert your doctor if you are experiencing these side effects.
