Levaquin is a prescription antibiotic medication with the generic name of levofloxacin. It is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by e. coli, staphylococcus, Klepsiella and many other organisms. It is commonly prescribed to treat urinary tract infections, skin infections, sinus infections, bronchitis, prostate infection, pneumonia and kidney infection. Levaquin is also given to people who have been exposed to anthrax. Levofloxacin is given orally as a tablet or liquid, or as a medicine delivered into the vein by IV line. It is taken for three days to two months, depending on the patient's condition. Like most drugs, Levaquin can cause side effects.
Musculoskeletal Problems
Common side effects of Levaquin are joint and muscle tenderness. The drug manufacturer states that some patients will develop inflamed tendons--the tissues that connect the muscles to the bones. In some cases, a tendon will rupture. The risk of this happening is increased if you take steroids or you are older than 60. You should report any tendon inflammation or pain to your physician right away; this pain is often felt in the ankle or arm.
Gastrointestinal Distress
The "2010 Lippincott's Nursing Drug Guide" reports that nausea and diarrhea are common side effects of Levaquin. Other adverse effects include dry mouth, indigestion, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain and intestinal gas. Bloody or watery diarrhea indicates a serious side effect.
Headache
Patients taking Levaquin often report headache, as well as dizziness. Drugs.com reports that you may have a fast heartbeat or faint. You should also monitor yourself for fever, weakness, convulsions, confusion and seeing or hearing things that are not there.
Problems With Urination
Levaquin can cause a change in your kidney function, including kidney failure. You may develop a urinary tract infection, have dark urine, have less urine or stop voiding.
Skin Problems
A skin rash can develop from taking this medication. This may make areas of your skin turn red and blister. Also, you may have yellowed skin, pale skin or tingling in your hands and feet. You may notice that you bleed easily or bruise easily.
Anxiety
Levaquin can cause you to feel anxious, depressed or restless. You may have difficulty sleeping and have nightmares when you do fall asleep. The difficulty sleeping may lead to fatigue and sleepiness.
Allergic Reaction
You may have an allergic or hypersensitive reaction to levofloxacin. This may manifest as hives and swelling of your face, mouth or throat. This throat swelling can be dangerous, because you may have difficulty breathing.
