Herbs to Fight Candida

Candida albicans is a common bacteria that causes yeast infections and other bacterial-type infections in the body. It is typically found in the digestive tract, vaginal area and in other mucous membranes. It thrives on sugars, especially refined and simple sugars. Those with candida overgrowth may experience chronic yeast infections, fatigue, headaches, chronic sinusitis and gastrointestinal distress. Fortunately, there are a few herbal remedies that may help control this proliferate bacteria.

Garlic

Garlic is a common culinary spice that is also used in herbal medicine. It is a powerful antibiotic and also has anti-fungal properties and kills parasites, yet it does not harm the body's healthy bacterium, or "friendly flora." It is used by herbalists to treat bacterial meningitis, influenza, bacterial infections, high blood pressure and to lower cholesterol. According to Clayton College of Natural Health, during World Wars I and II it was known as the "Russian penicillin". It can be eaten raw, one clove per day, or taken in capsule form. The University of Maryland Medical Center says adding garlic to your diet can help prevent yeast infections.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil comes from the melaleuca plant, native to Australia and New Zealand. It is naturally antiseptic, disinfectant and anti-fungal. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that tea tree oil is used successfully to treat oral thrush, which is caused by candida. It should not be swallowed, but can be applied topically, used as a mouthwash and gargle, or in a douche. It has powerful antimicrobial properties and will kill most bacteria, including friendly flora. As such, it should only be used as needed.

Pau D'arco

Pau D'arco is a canopy tree that grows in the tropical rain forests surrounding the Amazon. It is naturally anti-viral and antibiotic. It is used by herbalists to treat a variety of conditions, including ulcers, diabetes, rheumatism, yeast, cystitis, lupus and even cancer. It is most well known as a natural cure for yeast infections. It can be taken internally as an herbal tea, three to six cups per day, or you can cool it and use it in a douche.

Echinacea

Echinacea, also known as purple coneflower, is a natural antibiotic. It purifies the blood and strengthens the immune system. It is used by herbalists to treat a variety of infections, and functions much like a prescription antibiotic. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, studies show that it can also help prevent recurrence of vaginal yeast infections. UMMC recommends taking 2 to 4ml of liquid extract per day.
