How to Diet With Medifast

The Medifast Diet is an eating plan that reduces your caloric intake by introducing meal-replacement options into your diet. On average, dieters reportedly lose between 2 and 5 lbs. per week. While on Medifast, you are not required to count the nutritional components of food since the meals you eat are calorie and portion controlled for you. Speak to your doctor before starting Medifast to lose weight.

Step 1

Sign up for the Medifast plan through the diet's website. It has food plans for men, women and diabetics. Food costs average about $75 per week.

Step 2

Expect to eat six times a day. To curb hunger and keep your metabolism revved up, you are going to eat a total of six times over the course of the day. You'll eat every two to three hours while following the diet.

Step 3

Choose five daily meal-replacement options. When you sign up for the program, you are given a variety of foods to select for your five Medifast meals. Some examples of foods for these meals include protein bars, chili, vegetable soup, cream soup, scrambled eggs and shakes.

Step 4

Consume a single Lean & Green meal. One meal each day will be made up of lean meat and vegetables. The meal should include 5 to 7 oz. of lean meat. Lean meat choices include lean ground beef, chicken, turkey, fish and tofu. You should also eat three servings of vegetables at this meal. Vegetables permitted include broccoli, eggplant, lettuce, cabbage, celery, cucumbers, turnips and squash.

Step 5

Replace snacks. Instead of a Medifast meal, you can substitute with a low-calorie snack item. Some suggestions from Medifast include sugar-free gum, sugar-free gelatin, celery sticks and pickle spears.

Step 6

Participate in mild to moderate exercise. Since the Medifast diet is low in calories, the makers warn that you may not be able to engage in high-intensity workouts when first starting the plan.
