Alli has the distinction of being the only over-the-counter weight loss supplement approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The drug orlistat is the active ingredient found in the Alli supplement. Orlistat was previously available only through prescription until Alli started selling the reduced-strength version over the counter. It works by blocking the absorption of fat by the intestines. Speak to your doctor if you are interested in using Alli to lose weight.
Step 1
Purchase the Alli Starter Pack. Many pharmacies and big box retailers like Target carry it. It contains 60 capsules, a carry case, a calorie tracker and a starter guide. You can use the tools available at the My Alli website to track your weight loss.
Step 2
Swallow one capsule of Alli before any meal that you consume containing fat. Drink a full glass of water with each dose. Limit the number of capsules that you take to three per day.
Step 3
Expect stool changes. Since it blocks about 25 percent of the fat from food, side effects may include loose stools, gas and frequent need to use the bathroom. The excess fat may look oily as it comes out of your body.
Step 4
Follow a low-fat diet. To reduce side effects and aid in your weight loss, limit the amount of fat you consume at each meal. Choose low-fat meals that contain less than 15 g of fat. Some menu items to consider are salads with low-fat dressing, grilled fish, skinless chicken, turkey breast, grilled vegetables, fat-free dairy products and fruits.
Step 5
Consume a daily multivitamin. Alli can block the absorption of certain vitamins. Take the multivitamin before you go to bed each night.
Step 6
Take Alli for a 6-month period. According to the manufacturers of Alli, weight loss will occur within the first 6 months of using Alli.
