Your body is constantly exposed to germs and other environmental toxins every day. The key to preventing these harmful toxins that cause illness is to maintain a healthy immune system. Your immune system is comprised of a complex network of cells, tissues and organs that function together to protect your body from disease-causing microorganisms. If you find yourself feeling less energetic or catching colds too frequently, you may need to strengthen your immune system. Fortunately, several simple techniques will help you boost your immune system.
Step 1
Eat one to two servings of foods that are rich in ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). This vitamin helps increase your white blood cells, boosting the fighting power of your immune system to help fight infections. Foods rich in Vitamin C include all citrus fruits, guavas, papayas, kiwi and strawberries.
Step 2
Avoid consuming toxic substances such as alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, caffeine and illegal drugs. These harmful substances can weaken your immune system.
Step 3
Eat two to three servings of foods rich in carotenoids on a daily basis. These antioxidants strengthen your immune system by boosting the production of your lymphocytes, the white blood cells that destroy illness-causing microorganisms. Leafy green vegetables, oranges, tomatoes and carrots are all excellent sources of carotenoids.
Step 4
Eat 1 to 2 oz. of food rich in zinc every day. This vital mineral strengthens your immune system while enhancing cell regeneration; it also helps increase your white blood cells when your body is exposed to infections. Dietary sources of zinc include pumpkin seeds, yogurt, brown rice, potatoes, pine nuts and all bran cereal.
Step 5
Do yoga exercises that stimulate your thymus gland for 15 minutes daily. Your thymus gland is located between your heart and breastbone (sternum) and produces T-lymphocytes, a kind of leukocyte (white blood cells) that protects your body against toxins. Consult a yoga instructor to learn more about yoga poses that strengthen the immune system.
