Liquid diets seek to jump-start weight loss and provide a detoxification effect by reducing the amount of fat and number of calories ingested. These diets typically last for a few days and, according to a study published by Vanderbilt University, they typically restrict the dieter to 400 to 800 calories a day. While diets don't create permanent weight loss, they are a good way to quickly shed a few pounds.
Juice Diets
A juice diet replaces meals with fruit and vegetable juices. These diets are touted as providing a detoxification effect and they replenish your body with vitamins and minerals contained within the juice. EveryDiet, a diet review website, points out that juice diets are not an effective strategy for long-term weight loss and that you should consult your doctor if you're going to explore this dieting option. A popular juice diet is the Master Cleanse, which replaces meals with juice and other liquids.
Optifast Diet Program
The Optifast diet program is geared toward severely overweight individuals--those who weigh at least 50 lbs. more than their target weight. The program is usually administered for 26 weeks, and starts off as a liquid diet. As the program progresses, the dieter replaces the Optifast liquids with a balanced diet, which is planned out with a medical professional. EveryDiet points out that this diet is effective because the liquid shakes contain few calories.
Medifast Diet Program
The Medifast program is built around daily meal replacements, most of which are liquid shakes. EveryDiet claims that a dieter can expect to lose 2 to 5 lbs. a week while sticking to this program. Like the Optifast program, the shakes are slowly replaced by sensible foods as the dieter continues through the program. Physical activity and sensible dining habits must be continued if the dieter expects to keep the weight off.
