Hair loss, also known as alopecia, is a common occurrence in men as they advance in age. The condition can arise from an number of causes, including heredity, environmental damage, stress and hormonal changes. If you're looking to treat hair loss, Drugs.com recommends products that contain one of two FDA-approved treatment agents. Minoxidil and finasteride have both been shown to slow the rate of hair growth and, in some cases, regrow hair.

Rogaine Foam Hair Growth Treatment

Rogaine Foam contains the active ingredient minoxidil, and it is applied to the affected areas of the scalp. The product is approved by the FDA for treatment of hair loss, but it is not effective for receding hair lines or hair loss on the front of the head. The foam is applied twice a day, and the typical user can expect results after about 4 months of regular use.

Kirkland Signature Extra Strength Hair Growth

Like Rogaine, this hair growth solution contains the active ingredient minoxidil. It's meant to regrow and thicken hair at the top of the head, and users can expect results after 4 months of continued use. Like all hair growth products that contain minoxidil, any regrown hair will be lost if use of the product is discontinued.

Generic Minoxidil Treatments

A number of pharmacies offer generic brand medications that contain minoxidil. These contain the same active ingredients as name brands and are usually available at a lower cost.

Propecia for Hair Loss

Propecia (finasteride) is a prescription pill that was originally administered for problems associated with prostate enlargement. The Mayo Clinic points out that about 75 percent of men who take this medication as directed experience a significant decline in hair loss. More than half of Propecia users experience new hair growth in the targeted areas.
