Commonly referred to as heel fissures, dry skin on your feet can be a painful problem. Caused by everything from cold winter weather to improperly fitting shoes, this common condition can affect anyone at any age. If your feet have been giving you problems as the skin dries out and cracks, you aren't without recourse. There are several things that you can do at home to help remedy this condition.
Step 1
Soak your feet to help soften the skin. Add Epsom salt or lavender oil to warm water in a container large enough to comfortably soak your feet in. Allow your feet to soak for at least 15 minutes daily to help soften the skin. Lemon juice by itself is another great way to help soften your skin. Soak your feet in lemon juice for at least 10 minutes two to three times per week.
Step 2
Scrub your feet carefully with a pumice stone to eliminate dead skin and to help reduce areas of hard, calloused skin before it can crack. Stop immediately if you experience pain. The point is to reduce the dead skin, not to rub it raw and cause more discomfort.
Step 3
Moisturize your feet often by applying moisturizing lotion and covering your feet with soft cotton socks. Petroleum jelly can be applied not only to moisturize but also to lock in moisture. Do this often throughout the day and every night before you go to bed.
Step 4
Wear looser-fitting shoes to allow your feet a little breathing room. Tight, restrictive shoes will only make the problem worse. Wear comfortable shoes and avoid sandals and shoes with an open back.
Step 5
Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. Dehydration can prolong the condition of dry, cracked skin. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can help to dehydrate your body. Drink at least eight glasses of water daily.
Tips and Warnings
- Talk to your doctor or a podiatrist to explore possible causes and treatment options if the condition shows no signs of improvement in a week.
- Do not pick at dead skin or attempt to cut it away with scissors. This can lead to removing too much skin and causing painful infections.
