Fingernails are made up of a type of protein known as keratin, which grows underneath the cuticles at the base of the nails. As new keratin cells are formed and compacted together, they push the existing cells outward, making your fingernails grow. There are certain factors in the environment that can impact how quickly and strong your fingernails grow. Knowing how to stimulate nail growth can give you healthier, stronger fingernails with minimal effort on your part.

Moisturizing

Regularly moisturizing your nails will improve them. The best time to moisturize is after your fingers or toes have been in the water and gently dried, such as after bathing or washing dishes. When applying the lotion or cream, massaging it into the beds and cuticles of your nails will ensure that the most moisture possible is absorbed. It is also beneficial to apply a moisturizer before falling asleep at bedtime.

Healthy Eating Habits

Eating certain foods can also have a positive impact on nail growth. Healthy proteins, such as lean meat, low-fat dairy, eggs and nuts can help nails grow in strong since nails are made up of protein. Omega-3 fatty acids, found commonly in fish, can also improve nail health. Foods such as avocados, olive oil and almonds provide necessary vitamin E. Citrus fruits, broccoli, tomatoes and certain berries are excellent sources of vitamin C. Milk, mangoes, carrots and spinach help to increase your intake of vitamin A. Vitamin H, known as biotin, can be found is supplement form and can also improve the health of your fingernails.

Tapping to Strengthen

Dr. Kechijian, chief nail specialist at NYU Medical Center, recommends that you spend time in activities such as typing on the keyboard or playing the piano to strengthen and speed up nail growth. He states that this type of "trauma" is actually beneficial to your nails.

Nail Hazards

Certain behaviors and environmental factors can actually be very damaging to your nails and should be avoided. Nails should never be used as a tool to pick, pry or open anything. Broken nails should be filed or trimmed, preferably after soaking in some water for a bit (again, a shower or washing dishes would work here). Wear rubber gloves when doing activities that would expose nails to strong chemicals, cleaners, or detergents. Use of nail polish remover should be minimal --no more than once per week.
