Gout is a complex form of arthritis that affects your joints. The onset of gout is generally sudden and is characterized by severe pain, redness or tenderness. Gout is caused by an accumulation of urate crystals. These crystals are formed when high levels of uric acid concentrate in the blood when the body is unable to process the acid correctly. Symptoms are always acute, although they will come and go over time. Research by the Mayo Clinic indicates that men are more susceptible to developing gout than women. Although the specific cause may vary by person, there are some common symptoms identified as a result of gout.
Pain
One of the most pronounced symptoms of gout is intense joint pain. Pain is the most severe in the first 12 to 24 hours after gout has returned. Gout symptoms are most often experienced in the lower extremities (i.e. knee, ankle or toes). You may experience the feeling of a hot sensation in the joint or a burning pain at the joint site. Some gout sufferers report a crushing feeling at the joint or the feeling that the joint is dislocated. Refraining from applying pressure to the joint and taking an over-the-counter NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) can help to reduce the pain.
Joint Inflammation
Because the urate crystals accumulate on or around the joint, inflammation of the joint is a common symptom. Less intense than pain, you may feel some discomfort in the joint, similar to a dull pain. Stiffness may develop due to avoiding movements that will cause pain. Joints may appear swollen or red. Skin over the joint may become red, shiny or tense. Joints can become very tender and sensitive to even the lightest pressure. Your doctor can prescribe a medication to reduce inflammation and reduce pain and swelling.
Flu-Like Symptoms
Prolonged accumulation of urate crystals can begin to affect the immune system. Some gout sufferers report experiencing flu-like symptoms such as chills, mild fever, nausea, vomiting or loss of appetite. Report these type of symptoms to your doctor to obtain recommendations on treatment because traditional treatment methods could exacerbate your gout symptoms.
