Aggrenox is the brand name for a combination of dipyridamole and aspirin. It is used in the prevention of strokes. It is a blood thinner, which means it keeps your blood from forming clots. Blood clots are a major cause of strokes because they can lodge in your arteries and block blood from reaching the brain. Aggrenox is prescribed as a capsule that is either immediate release or extended release medicine.
Stomach Problems
The most common temporary, non-serious side effects from using Aggrenox include stomach problems. For example, Aggrenox can give you a sour or acidic stomach. It can cause you to belch and can give you indigestion and heartburn. It also may cause diarrhea. Less common serious stomach side effects include a sensation of burning in your stomach or stomach-area tenderness. These will tend to vanish as you use Aggrenox more for your therapy. Serious side effects that should be reported to your physician immediately include pain in your abdomen and vomiting that may or may not include blood and coffee-ground-like material.
Breathing
Some of the less common side effects of Aggrenox, the Mayo Clinic states, include breathing difficulties such as breathing troubles with or without exertion. Tell your doctor if you have trouble breathing while taking Aggrenox.
Vision and Speech
Aggrenox also may cause some serious but less common side effects that affect your speech and vision. For example, you experience double vision, a condition called diplopia. Speech problems may include speaking difficulties or speaking very slowly. You might even find you are unable to speak. Consult your physician about any of these.
Other Side Effects
Other serious side effects from Aggrenox use may include rectal bleeding, nosebleeds, tar-like defecation, a loss of memory, problems moving your legs, arms or facial muscles, chest tightness, seizures, skin paleness, red or purple skin spots, abnormal bruising and bleeding, or wheezing while breathing. All of these are categorized as less common side effects by the Mayo Clinic, but should be reported to a doctor right away. Temporary side effects that are not serious include motion difficulties, headaches, stiffness or pain in your muscles and redness, swelling or pain in your joints. Less common temporary side effects include pain in your back, decreased energy and strength in your body, swelling or pain in the rectum, abnormal drowsiness and a loss of your sense of taste.
