Tennis players who take their game seriously know that to keep the consistency in their game, their equipment needs to be checked frequently. One of the most important parts of the tennis racket to be checked is the grip, yet it is often overlooked. Grips can wear out, lose form and will change the way you hold a racket. For this reason, the grip needs to be replaced.
New Grips
Step 1
It is important to remove excess adhesive tape, staples or any other material left after removing the grip. This is important to not have any bumps under the new grip.
Step 2
Depending on the new grip, it will come with or without adhesive tape. When using a replacement grip with adhesive tape, remove about 12 to 18 inches of the backing before placing the new grip on the racket. If the grip comes without adhesive tape, you will need to add the tape to the grip. Start at the bottom of the racket, at the butt cap, winding the tape around the grip with about a half an inch spacing.
Step 3
Place the tapered end of the new grip at the bottom and add a staple. If you are left-handed, you will point the beginning of the tapered grip to the right so you can wrap the grip to the left. If you are right-handed, you will point the tapered grip to the left so you can wrap to the right. Hold the racket head against your stomach. Hold the grip tight and begin wrapping the grip by rotating the racket slowly, making sure the overlap of the grip is in line with the pattern.
Step 4
Continue wrapping until you reach the end of the grip at the top of the handle. You will wrap one more time so the new grip will pass the top of the line. Line the scissors up with the top of the handle and cut along that line.
Step 5
Take a 4- to 6-inch piece of industrial electric tape and wrap tightly around the end of the new grip. Some racket manufacturers have a rubber collar that slides over on top of the tape.
Tips and Warnings
- When you are done wrapping the new grip, you will want to check to see if it is to your liking with no bumps that will cause possible irritation while playing. If necessary, rewrap the grip until it feels right.
- Make sure you wrap the new grip around the top of the handle to have a perfect cut and grip.
