Candida, or Candida albicans, is a natural organism present in the vagina, mouth, digestive tract and skin. Symptoms of vaginal yeast infections, a common condition in women, occur when candida grows excessively in the vagina. Common treatment includes oral medications and creams, although a healthy diet may help prevent or reduce symptoms of Candida yeast infections.
Probiotics
Probiotics are healthy bacteria found in various foods that replicate healthy bacteria in the body. Medical expert Dr. Mehmet Oz, M.D., suggests acidophilus, a probiotic found in cultured dairy products, as a means of restoring Candida balance in the body and preventing or reducing yeast infections. Acidophilus is found in yogurt, kefir, buttermilk, some aged cheeses and sour cream. Fermented foods also contain probiotics. Examples include miso, pickles and sauerkraut. Many commercially prepared foods and beverages are now fortified with probiotic nutrients as well. Dr. Oz recommends 1 cup, or 8 oz., of yogurt per day for those who experience recurrent yeast infections.
Garlic
Garlic is an herb in the onion family. Garlic contains antioxidants and is known for a variety of health benefits such as reduced progression of cardiovascular disease, prevention and treatment of colds and reduction of harmful bacteria, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Natural health expert Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D., suggests intake of a fresh garlic clove daily for those with Candida overgrowth or infection. Keep in mind that garlic cloves are extremely potent in smell and taste. Other means of incorporating garlic into your diet include minced garlic, chopped garlic, dried garlic and garlic powder. Fresh garlic is preferable for best nutrient content, but all natural forms of garlic provide some benefits. Incorporate garlic into your diet routinely to help prevent yeast infections and promote overall physical wellness.
Fresh Fruit
Fruits provide a variety of vitamins and minerals, including antioxidants, which promote a healthy immune system and the body's ability to combat infection and disease. While simple sugars, such as table sugar, corn syrup, sugary cereals, soft drinks and candy promote yeast overgrowth, fresh fruit can be healthfully enjoyed by those who experience Candida overgrowth. Dr. Oz suggests that two fresh fruits consumed daily is healthy and will not exacerbate symptoms of yeast infections. Choose fruits deepest in color most often, as they tend to provide the greatest nutritional benefits. Cherries, berries, oranges, grapefruit, kiwi, melons and tomatoes all provide dense amounts of nutrients as well as dietary fiber. Incorporate a variety of nutrient-rich fruits regularly to reap the broadest nutritional benefits.
