Anal itching, also referred to as pruritus ani, consists of an itching sensation around the anus. The anus, at the end of the digestive tract, is the opening that separates the rectum from the outside of the body. Anal itching creates an urge to scratch, which may cause an increase in the itching or an embarrassment for the individual. The itching may be more intense after having a bowel movement or at night. Poor hygiene is not a usual cause for the itching, states the American College of Gastroenterology. Any number of conditions may create this uncomfortable condition.
Moisture
A common cause of anal itching is an increase of moisture around the area. This moisture may result from sweating, residual stool after a bowel movement or small amounts of leaking stool. Irritation and moisture from diarrhea may also contribute to the condition.
Foods
The chemicals found in certain foods or drinks may irritate anal tissue, resulting in itching. Common consumable items associated with itching include chocolate, milk, citrus, alcohol, tomatoes, spicy items, cheese, coffee, carbonated drinks, nuts and tea.
Dry Skin
Dry skin around the anus may itch. Scratching the skin causes additional dry skin. Washing the area with a harsh soap may worsen the dry skin and increase the itching because the soap removes natural oils.
Infections and Infestations
Some infections, such as some sexually transmitted diseases, may cause anal itching, according to the Mayo Clinic. A vaginal yeast infection may spread to the anal area and cause the itching. An infestation of pinworms or other parasites may also cause extremely uncomfortable itching.
Excessive Cleaning
Because of the normal functioning of the anus, many individuals may clean the area excessively. This vigorous cleaning removes protective oils and contributes to itching. Continuing to clean the area to get rid of the itching increases the symptom, states the American College of Gastroenterology.
Hemmorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are enlarged blood vessels in the anus that commonly itch. Hemorrhoids may cause pruritus ani.
Anal Fissures
Anal tears or abrasions may cause pain during a bowel movement and bleeding in addition to itching, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Irritants
Using products with added scents may cause irritation in the anus. Common products used in the area that may contain a fragrance include soap, laundry detergent, scented feminine hygiene products and scented toilet paper. The irritation caused by the products may increase the possibility of anal itching.
