Actonel is the brand name of the generic risedronate that is prescribed for women who already have gone through menopause. It helps to treat and prevent osteoporosis, which is bone thinning. The medication also may be administered to help both women and men have an increase in their bone mass, and it may be prescribed to help those who have used corticosteroids over a long period. Paget's disease, another bone disease, also may be treated with Actonel.
Stomach
The most common serious abdominal side effect of Actonel is pain in the abdomen or stomach. Another serious abdominal side effect is belching. See your physician immediately if you experience and of these. More common temporary, non-serious side effects include diarrhea, and less common side effects that will go away with continued use of Actonel include sour or acidic stomach, constipation, nausea, swallowing difficulties and discomfort in the stomach or stomach cramps.
Pain
Actonel also may cause pain in other parts of your body. The most serious such side effect is pain in the bones, but this is less common, the Mayo Clinic states. Tell your doctor about it. More common temporary side effects include back pain, headaches, pain in your joints or sides and pain while urinating. Less common non-serious side effects include pain in the bladder, aches throughout the body, pain in the chest and pain in the muscles.
Other Side Effects
Other common side effects include chills, fever, a cough and hoarseness. Less common temporary Actonel side effects are cloudy or bloody urine, changes in your vision (including blurriness), nervousness, nausea, indigestion and heartburn, motor difficulties, rapid or slow heart rates known as bradycardia and tachycardia and changes in your voice.
