Ingrown hairs usually occur when shaved or tweezed hair grows into the skin, causing irritation and inflammation. The ingrown hairs can be painful and lead to infections, permanent scarring and skin darkening. The condition can affect anyone but is most common with African Americans, Hispanics or anyone with tightly curled hair. Although ingrown hairs typically occur in the beard, armpit and pubic areas, it is possible to get ingrown hairs on the arms. These can be safely removed at home.
Step 1
Apply a topical ointment daily that is designed to control inflammation. This will help keep the area from becoming red and bumpy.
Step 2
Apply a topical retinoid cream over the affected area. These creams have exfoliating properties and can also relieve the thickening and darkening of the skin. Be sure to follow the instructions on the product.
Step 3
Squeeze the area surrounding the ingrown hair gently to bring the hair up to the surface.
Step 4
Wash the affected area with a washcloth for several minutes. Use a sterile needle to lift the hair that is embedded in the skin.
Step 5
Talk to your doctor, especially if you experience chronic ingrown hairs. You may benefit from hair removal treatments such as laser treatment or electrolysis.
Tips and Warnings
