Next to the strings, the grip is one of the most important parts of a tennis racket. Torn or worn grips can impact your game. Many players use over-wrap grips, which go over standard or leather grips and are tacky and non-slip. Over time, these will wear out and should be replaced. Changing your grips will help you keep the ball in play.
Remove existing over-wrap grip
Step 1
Remove the old over-wrap grip from the racket. Begin by taking the tape off the old grip at the top of the handle. Begin to peel back the old grip, which will come off fairly easy.
Step 2
Apply the new grip. Take the tapered end of the new grip and apply it to the end of the racket, or butt cap. The majority of new over-wrap grips have a small, square, sticky piece of adhesive tape at the end of the tapered end that you apply to the end of the racket.
Step 3
Wrap the grip around the racket. If you are left-handed, point the tapered end of the new grip to the right in order to wrap to the left. If you are right-handed, point the tapered end to the left to wrap to the right. Hold the head of the racket against your stomach and carefully begin wrapping the grip around the racket as you roll or turn the racket in your hand.
Step 4
Continue to wrap the grip around the racket until the new grip reaches the top of the handle. Wrap one more rotation past the top of the handle. Line up a pair of scissors with the top of the handle and cut the grip wrap.
Step 5
Apply a piece of tape to the end of the grip. Wrap the piece of tape around the end of the new replacement grip.
Tips and Warnings
