Best Acne Products Sold in Stores

There are many different acne products available in stores, each one touted to clear acne blemishes from the skin. When you are suffering from an acne breakout, it can be difficult to know which acne treatment products are the best to use and which ones will effectively clear your skin in a short period of time. Luckily, many people have had success when using a few reputable acne treatment products, which are available over the counter.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is a chemical compound that can be found in many different skin care products, the most common of which are concentrated creams and gels. Benzoyl peroxide is available in strengths of 2.5 percent, 5 percent and 10 percent, and are effective in eliminating acne by releasing oxygen into the pores, which kills the bacteria that cause acne. When using benzoyl peroxide on the skin, it is important to start out using a small amount, around the size of a small pea, and working up to a larger amount over time. This prevents the skin from experiencing side effects, like redness or peeling. Benzoyl peroxide cream can be used on the skin up to two times per day.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a substance that can be found in many acne treatment creams, gels, toners and even in make-up. People who are sensitive to benzoyl peroxide often find that their skin can handle using salicylic acid more easily. Salicylic acid helps eliminate acne by regulating the speed at which skin cells develop and slough away, thereby keeping the pores clearer and free of bacteria. When using salicylic acid products on the skin, it is helpful to use a pea-sized amount and increase the amount over time to avoid skin irritation. Salicylic acid can be used on the skin up to two times per day.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is an antimicrobial oil that is extracted from the Australian tea tree plant and bottled in its pure form. According to the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, tea tree oil is an effective alternative to benzoyl peroxide cream and does not cause irritation and inflammation on the skin like benzoyl peroxide creams can. To use tea tree oil on the skin, it must first be diluted into a 5 percent solution, which can be accomplished by combining 8 oz. of water with 5 drops of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil can be used on the skin in its diluted form up to three times per day.
