Acne spot treatments are usually applied to the individual acne blemishes, but when the skin is affected by moderate to severe acne breakouts, it may be helpful to use spot treatments over the entire face. When using spot treatments over the whole face, it is important to know the right quantities to use, how often to apply the treatments, and which treatments are the most effective. By using spot treatments over the entire face, you can improve moderate to severe acne.

Step 1

Apply a benzoyl peroxide cream treatment over the entire face. Squeeze a dime-sized amount of a 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide cream onto your fingers, and smooth the cream onto your face. Glide the fingers over your skin until the cream has absorbed into the skin completely.

Step 2

Apply a calamine lotion spot treatment over the entire face. Soak a cotton ball in calamine lotion, then spread the lotion over the entire face. Allow the calamine lotion to dry, and leave it on the skin for at least 1 hour. Rinse off the calamine lotion with warm water.

Step 3

Apply a tea tree oil spot treatment over the entire face. Combine 2 tbsp. of castor oil with 2 drops of tea tree oil, and spread the oils onto the skin, covering the entire area well. Allow the oils to remain on the skin for at least 10 minutes, then gently wipe them away with a towel.

Tips and Warnings

  • Benzoyl peroxide kills off acne by releasing oxygen into the pores. There are many strengths of benzoyl peroxide spot treatments, the most common of which are 2.5, 5 and 10 percent concentrations. Because the higher concentrations of benzoyl peroxide can irritate the skin when used frequently, use the 2.5 percent concentration when applying benzoyl peroxide cream to the entire face. Calamine lotion is usually applied to individual acne breakouts, but for acne that affects large areas of the face, it can be helpful to use calamine lotion over the entire area. Calamine lotion is a natural, drying mineral lotion that works to clear acne by drying out the fluid and puss inside acne pustules. Tea tree oil is an antibacterial and antimicrobial oil that can be used on the entire face to kill off acne-causing bacteria. Before you apply tea tree oil over large areas, dilute it into a 5 percent solution. Adding 2 drops of tea tree oil to 2 tbsp. of castor oil sufficiently dilutes the oil for use on the skin.
