Using hair products properly, in the right order and in the right amounts, will help your hair to grow and remain healthy. Keeping hair trimmed by cutting off split ends and damaged hair is the first step before applying any products, reports Long Locks, a site about long hair care. While there are some products that can repair damaged hair, split ends will travel up the hair shaft and retard growth from the follicles.
Shampoo
The first step, after getting damaged hair cut off, is to use a good shampoo that suits the grade of your hair. Fine, thin hair should be washed with light shampoo that will not weigh it down. Shampoo for fine hair usually is clear. Thick, coarse or dry hair requires a conditioning or hydrating shampoo that often is white and thick. Massage shampoo into the scalp to invigorate the hair follicles and promote circulation.
Conditioner
Conditioner moisturizes the hair. Use your fingers or a wide toothed comb to apply conditioner and start from the scalp. Pull the conditioner all the way through your hair if it is coarse or dry, and leave it on for five to 10 minutes. For fine hair, spread the conditioner only to the middle of the hair and not to the ends--to prevent the hair from getting weighed down.
Mousse
Depending on the type of style you're trying to achieve, as well as the kind of hair you have, the steps you will follow will vary. StyleList, a style and beauty site run by AOL, advises letting hair air dry for as long as possible before applying any product. Avoid rubbing your hair with the towel and instead pat and wring excess water out. When hair is 75 percent dry, raise up sections of your hair and apply root boost to the roots if your hair tends to be flat and straight. Curly, coarse or thick hair doesn't need the mousse at the roots, but all over the hair. While it's still damp, apply mousse and anti-frizz products to all of your hair. Dry your hair after applying mousse or root booster mousse. After hair is dry, put the hair dryer setting on cool to set your style.
Spray
Once your hair is dry and you've arrived at the desired style, spray it with hairspray. Use a spritzer on curly hair to add shine and hold the curls in place. A restructuring hairspray can be used on damaged hair to add extra conditioning while holding a style. Use a heavy holding spray if your hair tends to be flyaway. Spray on the roots to hold a lift. Spray a fine mist of hairspray on a brush and run it through the hair to tame flyaway hairs.
