Calcium lactate is a medication prescribed to treat low blood calcium levels in individuals who do not get enough calcium from dietary sources. It is also used to treat illnesses caused by low blood calcium levels, such as osteoporosis (bone loss), hypoparathyroidism (abnormally low activity of the parathyroid gland and osteomalacia (weak bones). It is also given to people to ensure they are receiving enough calcium. These include postmenopausal, nursing or pregnant women and certain people taking medications such as prednisone, phenobarbital or phenytoin. Calcium lactate must be taken properly in order to ensure proper treatment and avoid unwanted side effects.
Step 1
Take calcium lactate by mouth with food. Make sure to follow the directions on the package of the product, or take it as directed by your physician. For maximum absorption, if your everyday dose is above 600 mg, divide your dose and spread it out throughout the day. If you are unsure about any of the information, consult your physician or pharmacist.
Step 2
Use a dose-measuring cup or spoon to measure the liquid form of calcium lactate. This will make sure you get an accurate dosage. Never use a regular kitchen spoon. If your liquid calcium lactate is a suspension, make sure to shake the bottle vigorously before each dose.
Step 3
Dissolve the calcium lactate in a glass of water if it is an effervescent tablet form. Wait for the tablet to fully dissolve in the water before drinking. Never swallow or chew the calcium lactate tablet whole.
Step 4
Chew calcium lactate completely if you are taking the chewable form of the medication. Make sure to chew the tablet well before swallowing.
